Thalinomics: Average Indian gained Rs 11,000 per year since 2015-16 on moderation of food prices

CEA Krishnamurthy Subramanian has coined a new word 'Thalinomics' in the Economic Survey 2019-20. Thalinomics has quantified what an average Indian pays for a Thali across India. For Thalinomics, food prices across 28 states have been collected and analysed for the period FY07-FY20 to quantify what an average Indian household pays for a Thali across India. New Delhi: Krishnamurthy Subramanian, Chief Economic Adviser to the finance ministry has introduced a new concept 'Thalinomics' in the Economic Survey 2019-20, tabled in Parliament on Friday by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. Thalinomics has quantified what an average Indian pays for a Thali across India. The survey has highlighted that there has been a significant shift in the dynamics of Thali prices since 2015-16. "Absolute prices of vegetarian Thali has decreased significantly since 2015-16 across India and the four regions; though the price has increased during 2019-20," the survey mentioned. Worth mentioning here is that every CEA tries to bring something new and unique to the economic survey, which is tabled in the Parliament a day before the budget. CEA Subramanian has coined the word Thalinomics this year taking a cue from his teacher Raghuram Rajan, former Reserve Bank of India governor, who used the word 'Dosanomics' to explain the relationship between inflation and interest rates.
