CEA Krishnamurthy Subramanian has coined a new word 'Thalinomics' in the Economic Survey 2019-20. Thalinomics has quantified what an average Indian pays for a Thali across India. New Delhi: Krishnamurthy Subramanian, Chief Economic Adviser to the finance ministry has introduced a new concept 'Thalinomics' in the Economic Survey 2019-20, tabled in Parliament on Friday by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. Thalinomics has quantified what an average Indian pays for a Thali across India. The survey has highlighted that there has been a significant shift in the dynamics of Thali prices since 2015-16. "Absolute prices of vegetarian Thali has decreased significantly since 2015-16 across India and the four regions; though the price has increased during 2019-20," the survey mentioned. Worth mentioning here is that every CEA tries to bring something new and unique to the economic survey, which is tabled in the Parliament a day before the budget. CEA Subramanian has coined the word Thalinomics this year taking a cue from his teacher Raghuram Rajan, former Reserve Bank of India governor, who used the word 'Dosanomics' to explain the relationship between inflation and interest rates. For Thalinomics, food prices across 28 states have been collected and analysed for the period FY07-FY20 to quantify what an average Indian household pays for a Thali across India.
